Brady Corporation Develops and Manufactures Cost-Effective Photoluminescent Products to Help Customers Comply with New York City Local Law 26

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN (July 15, 2005) - NYC Local Law 26 mandates a new era in building safety. This legislation requires certain high-rise buildings to mark their emergency evacuation stairwells with high-intensity photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) markings and signs - and to do so by July 1, 2006.

To help NYC building owners comply with this important new life-safety code, Brady Corporation has expanded and is now manufacturing its own line of BradyGlo™ photoluminescent materials and products. All of these New York City-specific products are engineered to the exact specifications detailed in NYC Local Law 26.

Under the law, all existing Class E commercial properties standing 75 feet or higher are required to retrofit their evacuation stairwells - including basements and sub-basements - with markings and/or signage on:

• Doors opening to exits or exit passageways
• Corridors that serve as required exit passageways connecting two vertical exits
• Doors serving as horizontal exits
• Landings, perimeters of certain egress routes and individual stair steps
• Certain hazards and obstructions within or along vertical exits
• Horizontal extensions in vertical exits, horizontal exits, supplemental vertical exits, and exit passageways
• Handrails for buildings approved and built after July 1, 2006 (Handrail markings are optional for existing buildings.)

All mandated markings and signs must be visible the instant lights go out. Additionally, the law stipulates installation of the products near floor-level so they are visible from occupants who might be crawling to avoid smoke.

The New York Fire Department estimates that the new law affects about 1,800 commercial properties. Other high-rise properties - residential, hospitality, mercantile, and others - are encouraged to comply with the new requirements on a voluntary basis. New York City is the first municipality to mandate photoluminescent markings in stairwells.
